6th SCLForum2018 “Smarter Supply Chains” – CSCMP Spain Roundtable

On October 17th, the 6th Supply Chain Leadership Forum took place, organized by the CSCMP Spain Roundtable (Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals), which main focus was “Smarter Supply Chains”
This edition was held at Porta Fira Barcelona Hotel and gathered over 110 supply chain professionals, from more than 70 leading companies. The meeting was attended by professionals from 23 countries, including Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Egypt, the United States, Mexico, Paraguay, Argentina and Colombia.
The speakers of the event were Prof. Alan Waller OBE, from Cranfield University; Dr. Oliver Philipp, Panasonic Europe; Patricia Fernandez Wyss, MSF – Médecins Sans Frontières; Javier Gallardo, Portic Barcelona; Luis Miguel del Saz-Rodriguez, Airbus; Ben Mahy, Supportsquare NV; Ada Antones, Bayer; Efrén Almansa , SAPTools Consulting; Yasmine Sabri, Politecnico Di Milano y PHD Jorge Calvo, Globis Univ. Tokio

Guillermina Rodríguez, the new CSCMP Spain Roundtable President, welcomed everyone by introducing her Board Team and shared the value that CSCMP brings as education and research in the Supply Chain, as well as the global network of executives, professionals and students who are part of the CSCMP from all over the world.
Then Mark S. Baxa, appointed as CSCMP Chairman from January, 2019, presented information about CSCMP founded in 1963, today with more than 50 roundtables in the world and more than 8,500 members, making it the most important Global Professional Association dedicated to advancing and disseminating research and knowledge about supply chain management. He also highlighted the “SCPro ™ certification, recognized worldwide, and invited to attend the Annual CSCMP Conference 2019 in Anaheim-California, USA, where more than 3,000 Supply Chain professionals will know advances, research, development and global trends of the Supply Chains.
The first session was presented by Luis Miguel Del Saz-Rodriguez from AIRBUS, with the title “Digital Transformation Journey in Supply Chain”. Luis Miguel explained the practical case of his company, highlighting that the future of the supply chain is “intelligent, connected and agile”. He explained which are the main challenges that organizations are facing in this “trip”, such as limited data integration, lack of visibility on existing systems, coordination and responsibility in the supply chain. He also stressed the importance of having the best leaders driving this change that many companies are experiencing today, and explained that it is key that processes and people are aligned so that digitization be possible.
The second presentation was about “Operational Synergies through Trusted network” presented by Dr. Oliver Phillip, from PANASONIC EUROPE. Dr. Phillip introduced the NexTrust program: a project supported by the European Union, which brings together 31 partners to boost collaboration in the logistics function. Its goal is to increase efficiency and sustainability in European logistics. It will create interconnected and trusted networks that will collaborate with each other throughout the entire supply chain. The project objectives are very ambitious: increase the truckload factor by 50%, decrease deliveries by 20%, and reduce gas emissions by 50%
The third conference of the day was given by Javier Gallardo, Director of Portic Barcelona, speaking about one of the most trending topics “Blockchain & the electronic Bill of Landing”. He underlined how Port Barcelona is innovating to offer the latest technology, improve the documentary processes of shipping and remain competitive in the market. He emphasized how this neutral and open electronic platform allows the exchange of intelligent and secure information between public & private entities that participate in the Bill Of Lading process, while optimizing & automating processes through single data entry.
Next was time for the event’s Keynote Speaker, Profesor Alan Waller OBE, International Supply Chain Management in Cranfield University, who talked about “Thought Leadership: Driving Successful Change – the Key Leadership and Change Management Requirements”. Prof. Waller highlighted the importance of the Supply Chain function within the organization, indicating that the strategy of the supply chain will complement and make possible the business strategy for growth. He also indicated that companies should consider the supply chain as a function and not just as a process. In his research, he identified elements with significant improvement room on the implementation of strategic transformations: alignment with the strategy; global and holistic thinking; end-to-end value chain; realization and acceptance of personal contributions towards the goals of change; generation of short-term profits; focus on the client and not leave the service aside during the change; and finally adapt continuously to changing circumstances.
The afternoon sessions started with 2 parallel workshops, both of them about trending supply chain topics: S&OP/IBP Trend Process & its Change Management and Digital Transformation & Supply Chain.
The workshop “S&OP/IBP Trend Process, Change Management & Improvements”, was moderated by Guillermina Rodríguez, with Ada Antones from Bayer and Efrén Almansa, from SAPTools Consulting, as speakers.
Ada Antones presented “The importance of Change Management in the S&OP&IBP Journey”, and showed how the Vegetable Seed Division at Bayer managed this change from a traditional S&OP (Sales and Operation Planning) to an IBP (Integrated Business Planning), with more than 3000 varieties, 22 crops and sales in more than 160 countries and 1600 interested parties. She believes that this implementation success was due to: support from the Executive Board, vision aligned with the financial strategy and change management, with capable and dedicated resources to define and implement the strategy.
On the other hand, Efrén Almansa presented the Business Case “Enabling the S&OP Process”. He explained that the S&OP process is more than an agreement on a number or a figure; it is a systematized and integrated consensus among the participating stakeholders. Almansa showed the benefits of the implementation of SAP S&OP / IBP in the impacts of revenue growth and the increase of market share, the improvement in forecasts accuracy and on-time delivery, the agility of planning and more profitable tactical results.
The second workshop was titled “Digital Transformation & Supply Chain” and moderated by Miquel Serracanta, CSCMP Internation Advisor, with speakers Yasmine Sabri, from Politecnico Di Milano and PHD Jorge Calvo from Globis University Tokio.
Yasmine Sabri, introduced the subject “Preparing the supply chain for digital transformation”, and spoke about applications on latest technological advances such as Artificial Intelligence, Collaborative Robots or augmented reality in logistics. According to her research, 88% of the companies consulted expressed that they are going through a process of digital transformation, but only 25% say they understand what it really is. She explained that a digital supply chain has numerous benefits such as: better availability and reliability of information, real time data analysis, and predictive analytics, which will be key to avoid possible bottlenecks.
Jorge Calvo presented “Supply Chain Management 4.0”, explaining that ability to apply Artificial Intelligence & IoT (Internet of Things) to improve and even automate processes, operations, decision making in real time; reinventing business models, services and ecosystems, and redoing the intelligent experience of the client, is what will make “Smarter” businesses. He also highlighted what are the main factors for the success of “Smart” projects such as connecting to the world of “big data”. Finally, he pointed out some benefits that we can already see with the application of Artificial Intelligence: increase in sales of products and services, improvement in operational efficiency and increase in customer satisfaction
Afternoon continued with Patricia Fernandez Wyss, from MSF Médecins Sans Frontières in Spain. Undoubtedly an opportunity to understand the supply chain from an unusual perspective: humanitarian aid. Patricia explained how the supply chain of MSF, with presence in 75 countries and 41,500 workers, is structured; and the challenges they face continuously in very volatile contexts, sometimes in prolonged armed conflict with difficulties to access certain places. Even so, they have found numerous opportunities to solve these problems such as Artificial Intelligence or 3D printing, and closed the presentation pointing out the greatest challenge of all: the ability to maintain the people engaged with this cause.
Last business case of the event “Using Virtual Reality in Logistics Fullfillment centers”, was in charge of Ben Mahy from SupportSquare. He addressed that operations require smarter jobs with greater complexity and also simple jobs with more focus on quality. To achieve both objectives, we need real time decision support and a shorter learning curve. He also stated that the increase in the average age of the labor force, brings the need to capture, transfer and exchange knowledge in a scalable way, and this is about to be managed with IoT and Artificial Intelligence. His vision is having a workforce with open access to needed training at all time to improve its performance. Ben shared with the attendees figures presented by the USA training labs that reveal that the effectiveness to learn with virtual reality is approximately 75% retention rate.
Guillermina Rodríguez and Miquel Serracanta, highlighted the good response & participation from attendees, knowledge shared and the opportunity to bring together many highly qualified professional executives for a professional networking and learn about Supply Chain global trends
After it, Award and Recognition Ceremony was held, where Mark S. Baxa gave Guillermina Rodríguez the Best Roundtable International Award for Spain Roundtable succesful work with Young Professionals and Education in 2017/2018 RT programs.
Following, an Award was given to EAE Business School for its continued support in Education and Certification SCPro for professionals in Supply Chain. Mark S. Baxa, CSCMP Incoming Chairman and Guillermina Rodriguez, President of CSCMP Spain Roundtable presented the award to Josep María Galí, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies at EAE Business Sch.
CSCMP Spain granted a special recognition to SC executives that continuously attended previous SCLForum events, and the president Guillermina Rodríguez gave to each of them 2 tickets: for the 3rd CSCMP European Conference, which will take place in Warsaw (POL) in May 2019 and for the 7th SCLForum 2019 in Barcelona. The winners were Ivan Martínez from Bruneau-Picking’Pack Spain, Xavier Budet from La Sirena, and Mª Jesús Romeo from Fira Barcelona.
Guillermina Rodríguez closed the event inviting the audience to the 3rd CSCMP European Conference 2019, which will take place on May 16th and 17th, 2019 in Warsaw, Poland and to the 7th SCLForum 2019 in Barcelona on next June 13th 2019..
